Glacier and Ice Cave Tours
-
How does the Golden Circle Combo tour work?
This is a joint tour! Our trusted partner, Snowmobile.is, operates the Golden Circle portion using a modified small bus.
- Pickup: Begins in Reykjavík at 08:30 AM (please allow up to 30 minutes for the vehicle to arrive).
- Late Pickup? If your vehicle hasn't arrived by 09:00 AM, please contact them directly at +354 562 7000.
- The Glacier Leg: You will seamlessly transition to our Sleipnir monster trucks once you arrive at the glacier staging area.
-
What should I wear and bring with me?
The glacier is cold and windy year-round. We recommend:
- Clothing: Warm layers (thermal base and fleece mid-layer), a waterproof jacket, a warm hat, and gloves.
- Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots and warm socks. (Need gear? Rent it in advance from our partner IcelandCover for a 10% discount).
- Gear: Sunglasses (essential—the ice reflects intense sunlight!), a camera, and a fully charged phone (cold air drains batteries fast).
- Snacks: Water and snacks are welcome, but please keep open cans/coffee cups outside the vehicle.
-
I need clothing and boots, where can I rent this?
You can rent outdoor clothing and boots in Iceland with IcelandCover. They deliver to your hotel! Travel light and rent good ourdoor clothing that fits the Icelandic weather. Click here to find the clothing you need and receive a 10% discount: IcelandCover
-
What are the weather conditions in Iceland?
Icelandic weather can change fast, and often we experience all four seasons in one day. Dress according to the weather, we recommend wearing layers and waterproof shoes/boots.
When traveling with a rental car, please check the Icelandic Met Office’s website (vedur.is) and the road conditions (road.is) before driving to the meeting point. https://safetravel.is/ gives good information as well.
During the winter months add some extra travel time to arrive early enough at Gullfoss.
-
Where does the tour take place?
Our tour takes place on Langjökull glacier — Europe's second-largest glacier, covering about 953 km².
The meeting point is at the UPPER Gullfoss parking space, just under 2 hours from Reykjavík. Look for the Sleipnir transfer bus on the opposite side of the Gullfoss Panorama Restaurant & Café.
-
When and where should I arrive for the tour?
Our tour starts at 12:30 (12:30 PM) from Gullfoss, so we recommend being at the UPPER Gullfoss parking lot (the one in front of the Cafe) around 12:15 PM.
-
What is included in the tour?
Every Sleipnir adventure includes:
- A 3–4 hour journey into Langjökull glacier aboard our massive monster trucks (total time includes transfer from Gullfoss)
- An expert, English-speaking guide
- Free on-board Wi-Fi and built-in restroom facilities
- Safety crampons for walking securely on the ice
Seasonal Highlights:
- Winter (Nov – 15 Apr): Includes a guided exploration inside a natural ice cave and a scenic Highland bus transfer to our monster truck base.
- Summer (May – October): Includes sledding and Glacier Golf (weather permitting), plus traditional Icelandic kleinur (pastry) and hot drinks on the ice!
-
What is the duration of the tour?
The Monster Truck tour takes about 3 - 4 hours. The Golden Circle Combo tour takes about 10,5 hours including pick up.
-
Is it safe to go on the tour?
Our trucks are designed for driving on a glacier in all conditions. Our experienced drivers use their knowledge and GPS to drive safely over the glacier.
Your safety is our main priority. Icelandic weather can change fast, and depending on the forecast we might need to cancel the tour. You have then the option of rescheduling or you will receive a full refund if you wish to cancel.
-
What can I expect on the adventure?
- Ride Gigantic Monster Glacier Trucks.
- Witness Majestic Glacier Views.
- Engage in Glacier Activities.
- Visit a natural Ice Cave. (Nov-15 Apr)
- Experience a Glacier firsthand.
- Learn facts about glaciers and the Highlands.
- Listen to Nordic tales.
-
Do you offer tours all year around?
Yes! Our tours are available all year around.
-
What is the age limit?
The age limit for our tour is 4 years.
-
Is the ice cave available in the summer time?
The natural ice caves are only accessible from November to 15 April.
-
What is the main language of the tour?
The tour is guided in English.
-
Are there seat belts in the trucks?
Yes. Our trucks have seat belts and it’s compulsory to use them.
-
Can I join the tour if I am pregnant or have a back injury?
While our massive trucks offer the smoothest ride possible on ice, the mountain roads (F-roads) and glacier terrain can be bumpy. Because the tour takes place in the remote highlands far from medical facilities, pregnant individuals and those with pre-existing back injuries participate at their own risk. We highly recommend consulting your doctor first.
-
Can I drive my rental car to the tour, and what are the roads like?
Yes! You can easily drive any standard rental car to our meeting point at the Gullfoss Panorama Restaurant. The roads from Reykjavík to Gullfoss are fully paved and well-maintained.
Once you check in with us, you will leave your rental car safely parked at Gullfoss. From there, we handle the driving. We will take you into the highlands on rugged gravel "F-roads" (mountain roads) and onto the glacier itself. The ride can be a bit bumpy, but our giant monster trucks are designed to handle it smoothly and safely!
-
What is your policy on smoking and alcohol?
Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during the tour. Smoking/vaping is allowed only during designated outdoor stops; please help us protect the environment by disposing of cigarette butts in an appropriate container.
-
Is it possible to book a personalised tour?
We offer private tours and specialized private arrangements. Please send us an inquiry.
