We’ve been caught in sideways rain in July, sunburned in September, and snowed on in August. So if you’re planning to hop in a monster truck and head toward Langjökull or the wild interior, here’s a peek into what Icelanders actually bring along—and what tourists usually wish they had.

Layers. Always layers.

Forget about dressing for a season. In the Highlands, you dress for every season. Most of us throw on a decent base layer (no cotton), a fleece or wool mid-layer, and a waterproof shell. We’re not trying to look cute—we’re trying not to freeze while looking at a glacier and sweat while walking 100 meters uphill. Bonus points for having a puffy jacket in your bag. Windproof gear? Essential.

Most tourists nail the outer layers… but forget the basics. Bring extra socks. You’ll thank us later.

A hat, gloves, and a buff — even in summer

There’s something about Highland wind that goes straight to your bones. Doesn’t matter if it’s 14°C in Reykjavík. Up here, the wind doesn’t care. A lightweight hat and gloves take up almost no space, and a buff or neck gaiter is great for blocking cold air—or covering your face during a wind gust that brings a mouthful of sand with it.

And yeah, we wear them year-round. That’s just how it is.

Food that doesn’t need cutlery

This might be the most Icelandic advice of all: pack a sandwich, an energy bar, and some chocolate. Maybe a dried fish snack if you’re feeling bold. We’ve seen tourists bring pasta salad in Tupperware and try to eat it with a fork while standing in a snowdrift. Don’t be that person. You’ll want food that’s easy to eat, doesn’t freeze instantly, and ideally doesn’t require a table.

Oh, and always bring more snacks than you think you’ll need. The Highlands have a way of extending your day without warning.

A full water bottle (or thermos with coffee)

You won’t find convenience stores or vending machines out there. Icelanders almost always bring a refillable water bottle or, better yet, a thermos full of coffee. A warm drink hits different when you’re halfway through a glacier tour and the wind’s picking up.

Want to go full local? Add a bit of hot cocoa powder into your coffee. We call it kaffisúkkulaði and it tastes like heaven in a cup!

Sunglasses and sunscreen

This one always surprises people. Even in winter, glacier light is no joke. The sun reflects off the snow and ice like it’s trying to prove a point. Icelanders know: snowblindness isn’t just a mountaineer’s problem. Throw a pair of sunglasses in your bag and a small tube of sunscreen in your pocket—especially if you’re touring Langjökull in spring or early summer.

A power bank (but prepare to not need your phone)

Reception out in the Highlands is spotty at best—and that’s part of the charm. Icelanders tend to put the phone away and enjoy the silence, but we still bring a power bank just in case. You’ll want juice for photos, even if you’re just using airplane mode and your camera app. You’d be amazed how quickly batteries drain in the cold.

Toilet paper. Yes, seriously.

You’ll laugh now, but this is gold out there. Even on a guided tour, nature sometimes calls in the middle of nowhere. We keep a roll in a ziplock bag and call it the emergency kit. Wet wipes too, if you’re fancy. Don’t ask us how we know—it’s just good practice.

Optional, but highly recommended: Icelandic chocolate

There’s no scientific reason for this, only emotional truth. A bit of Síríus or Appolo Lakkrís in your pocket can turn a cold, windy moment into something you smile about. Icelanders don’t just hike or travel—we snack our way through it.

The Tatra was custom-built with a specific chassis from Tatra, designed to accommodate large, 65-inch tires on 30.5-inch rims with a double beet lock system. This setup allows the truck to operate in rough terrain with air pressures as low as 4 psi. Sleipnir Tours constructed the passenger cabin in Hafnafjörður, Iceland, focusing on strength (using Steel 52) and excellent insulation, essential for the cold Icelandic climate.

Engine and Modifications

The truck is equipped with a powerful 530 HP DAF engine and an Allison 4700 automatic transmission, which includes a torque converter and retarder to enhance both power and control. Although the truck is modified, its 26-ton weight provides enough stability and traction that no additional steering or wheel adjustments are needed.

The Tatra truck is equipped with a unique Pacto dry toilet system from Danfo, which uses a biodegradable flushing foil made of corn starch instead of plastic, reflecting Sleipnir Tours' commitment to sustainability. The Tatra truck is primarily used for tours to Langjökull glacier starting from Gullfoss Cafe. Taking visitor's all year round to the glacier, with a summer and a winter program, see more about that here .

The large tires are specially designed to cross crevasses up to 2 meters wide! However, during our standard tours, we only visit areas of the glacier where there are no crevasses at all, making it a very safe experience.

The Sleipnir Legacy

Named after the mythical horse Sleipnir, Sleipnir 1 and Sleipnir 2 represent the company’s quest to build the ultimate glacier tour vehicles. Fjalla-Eyvindur and Halla: A Love Story of Survival and Desolation

In the harsh solitude of Iceland's highlands, mid-1700s, a riveting saga of love and outlawry took shape that would echo through time. This timeless tale of survival, love, and the desperation of two souls unfolds around Fjalla-Eyvindur, a notorious outlaw, and Halla, a farmer's daughter whose fate intertwines with his. This story is their legacy.

Once an ordinary man named Eyvindur found himself standing on the precipice of an extraordinary life. Charged with theft, he was condemned to outlawry, stripped of his societal rights, and banished into the unforgiving Icelandic wilderness. With the looming threat of death by the hands of any avenger, Eyvindur transformed himself into Fjalla-Eyvindur, a man of resourcefulness and tenacity. From the mountains to the hot springs of Hveravellir, he crafted his sanctuary, maintaining an elusive existence from 1745 for an astounding forty years.

Meanwhile, in the lowlands, Halla, a farmer's daughter, lived her life unaware of the destiny awaiting her. Langjökull used to have another name: Baldjökull

Langjökull, "lang" meaning "long" , and "jökull" meaning glacier in Icelandic, has an intriguing history of names. In ancient times, it was called Balljökull, which translates to "round glacier." Over time, its name changed to Baldjökull, where "bald" refers to white or bald. Eventually, it became Langjökull, a name that perfectly captures its vastness and immense size, as if it stretches out for a long distance. The change in names not only reflects the glacier's changing shape over the centuries but also the evolving understanding of its characteristics by the people who named it.

Keep in mind that during winter, road F35 from Gullfoss is closed for public traffic. Check your rental car agreement, as it can be that Kjölur is only suitable for 4WD vehicles.

Klaki Base Camp: From Húsafell, take road 518 for approximately 3 km to access the Kaldidalur road 550. Drive for about 12 km, then turn onto road 551 (Langjökullvegur). Follow this road to its end (about 9 km) to reach the glacier. Just before the entrance, you'll find Klaki Base Camp. In summer, a 4x4 vehicle can make the journey from Húsafell. However, in winter, due to snow, a special super-jeep tour might be necessary.

This route is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. From Reykjavik, head onto Route 36, leading to Þingvellir. From there, switch to Route 365 until Laugarvatn, and then follow Route 37 to Geysir. Continue on Route 35 from Geysir to reach Gullfoss.

To Gullfoss from Reykjavik via Route 1 and Route 35:
This journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Start on Route 1 from Reykjavik, then at a junction past Selfoss, switch onto Route 35, which will take you directly to Gullfoss.

Yes, the surface meltwater on the glacier in Iceland is generally safe to drink. Why do Ice Caves Form?

Natural ice caves are among the top tourist attractions in Iceland . It's not just a faceless statistic; most of the tourists touring on a glacier with our Sleipnir glacier monster trucks confirm how much they want to explore natural ice caves themselves. Who wouldn't fall in love with the mesmerizing blue-hued walls and all their irregular, amazing shapes? But have you ever wondered how ice caves form on glaciers?

The Process of Forming an Ice Cave

In short, the recipe for a glacial cave is the summer sun, which heats the air, water, and ice, and gravity. When meltwater flows through crevasses or other openings in the ice, it creates tunnels and chambers within the glacier . As the meltwater continues to flow through these channels, it erodes and melts the ice around it, slowly carving out larger and larger spaces. Over time, these channels and chambers can become quite extensive, forming intricate networks of passages and rooms within the glacier. The walls and ceilings of these spaces are often smooth and polished, giving them a beautiful and otherworldly appearance.

Natural Ice Caves do not Have a Twin

This process makes every natural ice cave in Iceland unique, and we have hundreds of photos to prove it. Yes, not all of them have the ocean blue color you see on Instagram . For instance, our recently discovered ice cave, shown in the photo on the right, is much darker. Its color comes from volcanic ashes trapped in ice for around 500 years. There are also many rough textures inside and other interesting ice formations . For example, on one of our latest glacier ice cave tours, we found a peculiar shape that you can see in the photo below.

Behind the Scenes

Only 24 hours earlier, the entrance to the ice cave that you see in the photo above was tall and wide enough for an adult person to comfortably walk through. With the increase in temperature, it took considerable effort to enlarge the hole to its previous size . This is probably the most overlooked part of the ice cave experience in Iceland. During the ice cave season, our Sleipnir tour c rew must constantly work on ice cave maintenance , curving steps in snow, widening the entrance, or providing light inside. Just to let you know, we’re not complaining. Seeing the wide-open eyes in amazement of tourists who go with us on tours is a very satisfying and rewarding feeling .

Winter Wonderland

We wish the ice cave season in Iceland would last the whole year. However, the Icelandic wilderness is quite different from an amusement park. The weather plays a huge factor in the experience . Ice caves don't like rain and high temperatures. With constant rain, ice caves can be flooded with an amount of water that exceeds technical abilities to be drawn away. Therefore, the best time to enjoy ice cave glacier tours is during the coldest winter months, between October and January . That said, no winter is the same in Iceland. Sometimes the season can go way further - like this year - when our ice cave was open until the end of March.
